For some time it was rare to hear the words "vegan Budapest" in one sentence. This was mainly because the Hungarian diet is meat heavy with dishes like beef goulash or chicken paprika.

Most vegans would have to settle for no yogurt falafel gyros or cheeseless pizzas. 

Those days are over now as the new generation is introducing the new healthy lifestyle to its city. With the new diet many vegan-only restaurants have opened up and old restaurants have introduced vegan options to their menus. 

The vegan lifestyle has started to catch on that now there special health stores opening up carrying many vegan products.

This Vegan Budapest guide will show you just how vegan-friendly city is. Below are places where you can enjoy vegan Budapest style meals, where you can find some great vegan restaurants, and where to shop.

Kozmosz Vegán Étterem

Located just outside of the main city center is an underground but cozy restaurant called Kozmosz Vegán Étterem. 

They serve traditional Hungarian dishes such as bean goulash stew and a cottage-cheese csusza pasta. You can also order items a la carte, burgers with bean patties, and delicious desserts. The desserts constantly change so make sure to ask which are available. 

Kozmosz does close during the day. They are normally opened from 11:30 AM to 3:00 PM for lunch and 6:00 - 10:00 PM for dinner.

Gettó Gulyás

Compared to the above restaurants, Gettó Gulyás is a sit-down restaurant serving traditional Hungarian dishes. 

The menu is not completely vegan, but they do have some vegan and vegetarian dishes. So be aware of what you are ordering and make sure to ask your waiter should you have any questions about the menu. 

Part of the reason Gettó Gulyás gets a mention is that it is a great spot to go with friends that are not vegan.

Las Vegans

Las Vegans fast food truck can be found in four different parts of the city, including the Karavan street food. They offer a variety of burgers that come with fried vegan cheese, carrot patties, mushroom patties and more. 

They also serve nuggets and sweet potato fries with savory sauces. 

Try the Sweet Dream burger, it is made of fried vegan cheese, grilled eggplant, onion jam, green lettuce, and tomato. 

Prices at Las Vegans are very reasonable and definitely worth try while visiting Budapest. They accept cash and card.

Vexicana is a food truck serving awesome vegan Mexican food. They are parked right next to Las Vegans in the Vegan Garden courtyard. 

Their menu consists of burritos, quesadillas, jalapeno poppers and much more. Order the vegan burrito - it's made of rice, beans, cream, salsa, vegetables, and vegan cheese.

Vegan Falafel Hummus dish - different than the Falafel main dish. This one does not bring sides. 

Hummus Bar

Large portions of hummus and pita bread and affordable prices can be found at Hummus Bar. 

This chain of restaurants serves a lengthy menu that features vegan, vegetarian and meat dishes. 

Try the Falafel dish from the proper main section. For 1750 HUF, or roughly $6.20, you get a plate of falafels, hummus (of course), and your choice of two sides: salads, fries, or couscous. You also get four freshly made pita bread! 

Now that is a deal! 

As mentioned, the Hummus bar is a chain of restaurants that can be found all over the city, so make sure to save them all on your Google Maps list to quickly find the closest one to you. 

Vega City

This vegan style buffet restaurant is an excellent option for lunch or dinner. The menu constantly changes with choices from soups, vegan Budapest dishes, plates of pasta, burgers, and much more. 

The service is super friendly and getting a meal there is cheap, making it perfect for travelers on a budget. 

Vega City is opened Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 7 PM and they close on Saturdays and Sundays. They accept both cash and card.

Where to buy groceries as a vegan in Budapest?

Eating out can become expensive or sometimes you can't find a restaurant serving what you are looking for. 

Just as there are many vegan Budapest restaurants, there are a handful of vegan shops or markets in Budapest. 

Supermarkets like Spar, Aldi, and Lidl will cover your vegetable and fruit purchases. These markets normally have a healthy section on the wall, stocked with quinoa, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, almond milk, and many more products. Occasionally you can find tofu in the refrigerated section. 

Although these supermarkets are great for your regular grocery shopping needs, you probably will want to buy other vegan products that are not found in a Spar or Aldi. 

Thankfully there are DietaLife and Bio-Barát Bibolt that cater to our vegan needs. 

Dieta Life Market & Food Bar

This small local health store chain sells vegan products like tempeh, tofu, bread, cheese, and yogurt. They also have other products for diets such as paleo and gluten-free.

Each aisle is labeled with mentioned diets/lifestyles and supplements. 

Dieta Life Market also sells vegan cleaning supplies and personal care items like toothbrushes, detergent, and shampoo. 

To top it all off, they have a food bar at their three locations in which you can buy packaged meals and desserts. 

Their hours are Monday through Friday 9 AM - 9 PM, Saturday 10 AM - 6 PM, and closed on Sundays.

Bio-Barat Bibolt

This other chain of health stores seems to cater to the vegan lifestyle/diet than the others. Here you can buy vegan chips and crackers, baking and cooking ingredients, tofu, tempeh, desserts, bread and much more.

Bio-Barat Bibolt also has a wide selection of supplements and vitamins.

The prices for their items are very reasonable and they accept cash and card. 

DM and Rossmann

DM (Drogueriemarket) and Rossmann are chains of drug stores that can be seen everywhere in Budapest. 

These drug stores get a mention because they have a small health section in their stores. 

At a DM or Rossmann, you can find tofu, grains, vegan chocolate, and other products. Not all of the items are vegan, so make sure to read the labels and ingredients. 

Being a Vegan in Budapest

As a vegan, it is can be difficult to travel and find places that serve vegan dishes or have vegan options on their menu. 

You could always cook your meals, but cooking can get tiresome. Thankfully the vegan Budapest community is growing and more restaurants and markets are opening up.
